“What is this life if, full of care”, when every day becomes a regimented grind with no time to smell the rose syrup? Dull as dish-water, that’s what. Given that our alleged ”summer” consisted of rain and gloom, a sunny day is as good an excuse as any to stop and appreciate the little things that make life worthwhile. Little things like ‘Baby Guinness’ shots*.
Plus it’s much easier to go a-wandering (ahem, a pub crawl) when you’re not being pelted by perpetual rain.
Yesterday the Cocktails at Dawn girls celebrated the unexpected but nevertheless glorious sunshine in the best fashion possible: sitting inside dark booze-holes! We look after our pale skins, if not our livers; though I personally prefer to cast it in a purely Promethean light. We’re not raddled – it’s just a wee friendly nibble from the eagle of excess, and all for the enrichment and betterment of … er, our own lives. Admittedly that metaphor may need a little more polish but hey, check out the classical education at hard at work. And they say you never use it. Ha!
The venues in question; The Dizzy Llama; adorable baby bar, attached to the restaurant. There’s only a few stools, but that’s just cosy when there’s a knowledgeable barman and plentiful cocktail selection ripe to be explored. After a circuitous wander into the less refined outskirts of City Road via one of the bland Brains pubs that litter Cardiff like discarded chips we ended up at Milgi.
You can tell Milgi is a, ahem, groovy sort of place by the fact it has its own yurt in the back garden. If Migli was a person it would be played by Zooey Deschanele; all fey, wide-eyed, but confident in shabby chic and glossy hair. Like the aforementioned stupidly named one, there’s more to it than just a tent with hippy airs; right now there are jugs of homemade Pimms to be quaffed, alongside all kinds of fair-trade vegetarian magic - their cakes palpably stares at you through the glass counter.
It’s garage is also the new host to Music Geek Monthly; Cardiff’s tip-top music listening event, which I ended up stumbling along after staying for “just the one” more. Always stay for just the one more; there’s simply nothing like it. I met some absolutely super people, I’ve a stack of new music to digest (and be snooty about) … and lost my phone. Again.
I need my phone to be on a string, like a toddler’s mittens.
Moral of the story; gosh, I’m sorry I’m distracted by all the sunshine….
